Phoenix has two nicknames: “Valley of the Sun” and “The Valley”. On February 14, 1912, Phoenix became a state capital, as Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state under President William Howard Taft.
Phoenix is the capital and most populous city in the state of Arizona. Phoenix has a population of 1,608,139 residents as of 2020. It is the fifth-most populous city in the United States, and it is one of only two state capitals with a population of more than one million residents, Austin, Texas being the other.
Phoenix was settled in 1867 as an agricultural community near the confluence of the Salt and Gila Rivers. Cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, and copper were known locally as the “Five C’s” anchoring Phoenix’s economy.
High Tech businesses and startups have increased in the Phoenix area in recent years. Local and national entrepreneurs see Phoenix metropolitan area as a great place to start a business.
Downtown Phoenix is home to multiple giant murals on display outside buildings. Many of these murals were commissioned by local cities and/or companies like Arizona Public Service (APS).
You can see some of these murals on buildings on Roosevelt and 7th Street. These local artists, from around the Phoenix area, represent the cultural diversity in the Phoenix artist community.
New business startups in services, restaurants, retail sales, and tourism are on the rise. High-tech manufacturing, home and apartment construction as well as the ease of starting a business makes Phoenix a good place to start a business. The first McDonald’s franchise was sold by the McDonald brothers to a Phoenix entrepreneur in 1952.
The Phoenix Suns were the first major sports team in the Phoenix area, being granted a National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise in 1968. The Suns set franchise record with win No. 63 in a single season and eliminated the Lakers from playoffs on Apr 5, 2022.
On April 28, 2022 in Phoenix, the Suns retired the New Orleans Pelicans with a 115 – 109 victory in a 4-2 series win. Now, the Suns move on to round two – 2022 Western Conference Semifinals. Round 2 Semifinals best of seven games: Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks.
The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest continuously run professional football franchise in the nation. Founded in 1898 in Chicago, they moved to Phoenix from St. Louis, Missouri in 1988.
